Did you know that on average, you’re supposed to take 10,000 steps a day? That’s an average of almost 5 miles a day, give or take, depending on your stride length.
That sounds like it could be almost impossible for people who are OTR drivers, but it’s definitely not. A good way to get your steps in is to walk when you’re not driving. During your mandatory 30 minute break (DOT requires that you must take a 30 minute break during your first 8 hours of driving), put on a good pair of running or walking shoes and get a mile in there. If you’re walking at a brisk pace, it should only take you about 15 minutes. Then set some goals for yourself, like getting your mile in under 12 minutes or 10 minutes.
Also, check out inexpensive gyms that have nationwide locations. We are not affiliated with any gym, but Planet Fitness is only $11 a month and they have showers in their gyms. So not only can you get your miles in on a treadmill or elliptical, you can get a free shower too! The best way to start working out is to just simply START; even if it’s just walking on a treadmill.
